Score: 92
Smooth, Velvety and refined, this is a juicy Syrah that wraps its vivid blackberry, guava and Italian plum flavors in a delicate blanket of refined tannins. The finish lingers enticingly. Drink now through 2014. 117 cases made. – H.S.

(includes 3% viognier) Deep, bright ruby-red. Musky, reduced aromas of dark raspberry, smoked meat and pepper: very syrah! Think juicy and intense but tightly wound, with inky and candied notes to the dark fruit and smoked meat flavors. Perhaps most expressive today on the lingering finish, which offers notes of berries and flowers.

Forward and dense, this has rich scents of mixed berries, spice, fresh herbs and toast. The fruit is soft and ripe, and the wine plush, forward, appealing and open. A bit of citrus rind adds complexity to the long, toasty finish; just a bit of heat also. –P.G.

2004 Bunnell Family Cellar Clifton Hill Vineyard Syrah, Wahluke Slope
OUTSTANDING
Clifton Hill is a west-facing vineyard above the Columbia River in one of Washington’s newest appellations. It’s an extremely warm site and seems perfect for red varieties. This Syrah reveals northern Rhône tendencies with aromas of blackberries, bacon fat, smoke, vanilla and Bing cherries, followed by rich, delicious flavors of gaminess, caramel, ripe cherries and sweet pipe tobacco. This is a sensual wine from first sip through the lengthy finish. -117 cases
